It is best not to use a steam room under certain conditions and if you are in any doubt at all as to whether it will be safe or not visit the doctor and let them tell you if you will be alright to go in.
People Who Can’t Use a Steam Room
There are a number of conditions that may stop you using a steam room. The benefits that apply to some users clear will not be the same for others:
- Pregnant women – there can be damage to the unborn child if a pregnant women uses a steam room. The rise in the heart rate can have an effect in the way that blood reaches the embryo and it can either hamper the growth or in the worst cases can kill it. As pregnant women will feel hot throughout most of the 9 months this will make them even hotter and feel uncomfortable.
- Young children – there are a couple of reasons why small children should not go into a steam room. When they are in there they will obviously get very hot. They do not have the same ability to cool down as adults do and they will end up with a higher temperature than is good for them. There will also be problems due to their underdeveloped lungs. They will be breathing in an amount of vapour that their body cannot deal with. As there may be bacteria in the vapour – as is the case in some places where the water is direct from the areas normal supply – they can end up with an infection. As their lungs are still developing it will take longer than normal to heal and may also hinder the lungs development.
- If you have taken drugs or drunk alcohol it will be best not to use the steam room. You will be dehydrated anyway and may not be in the right frame of mind to realise that there is something wrong. If you start to feel dizzy there is the risk of falling and not being able to get out. As well as any injury picked up the dehydration will end up even worse the longer you are in there.
- You should not use the steam room if you are tired. It will be up to you if you think you will be able to stay awake but if you are feeling drowsy you should keep away or at least make sure that there is someone else around who will wake you up if you do start to doze off. You will be relaxed just by being in the steam room so don’t let it go too far.
Using the Steam Room
It may seem that there are many people who should not use a steam room but in many cases it will be just a temporary measure. A healthy person should not have any problems using it and there should be no side effects. You should be able to enjoy the time you are in there and not spend it worrying about something that may go wrong.
