Steam Room Ventilation

There is very little difference in the ventilation required for a steam shower than there is for a normal shower. Just think, the shower will normally issue more steam into the atmosphere of the bathroom or any other rooms close by because it is not fully enclosed whereas steam showers do at least keep the steam contained. Even if a shower is housed in a shower cubicle, there is a gap above the door from which the steam can escape. For this reason, fans are fitted in bathrooms but a normal fan is not totally able to deal with all this dispersed steam, this is why owners require specialised steam room ventilation.

The Difference between a Normal Shower and a Steam Room Shower

A steam shower cubicle is fully enclosed, sealing all the steam into its environment.  All materials used in the construction of the shower and its fittings are water and steam resistant, which means that during a steam bath, when between three and five gallons of water are converted into steam, this reacts with the materials used in the construction, e.g. tiles or glass, and condenses back into water, which drains away.

A warm shower after the steam bath reduces the temperature of the cubicle causing further light condensation.  When leaving the steam shower, the only thing left is a slight humidity and a little dampness.

Why is Steam Room Ventilation Necessary?

It is advisable for a steam shower to have ventilation because the need to keep the humidity in the atmosphere of the home stable is a matter of importance.  We are all different.  Some people like to step into a steam shower and enjoy the intense heat immediately, others prefer the air to warm up gradually.  However you prefer to take your steam shower, on entry into the cubicle there will be no surface wetness, but as the air heats up and the humidity is increasing, surface moisture will build up.  Should you need to leave the shower cubicle during your steam bath, the humidity will further increase.  When it comes to control of this humidity, information is available which relates to how important it is to ventilate the home and remove as much moisture as possible

What is the Best Form of Steam Room Ventilation?

Fans differ greatly and vented fans and ceiling fans used to be very popular in bathrooms.  These types require large cuts out of the ceiling, they are large, noisy and unappealing in appearance.  They are also inefficient and are not recommended for use in as ventilation in a steam shower.  In today's society, larger feature bathrooms, wet rooms and spa bathrooms are popular and the recommended type of steam room ventilation is a “multiple ventilation location system.”  The days of a small circular, cord operated vent in the window of the bathroom are long gone.
